live to create : mixed metal necklace

IMG_2543 IMG_2531

I have been trying to clean out my entire room since being home. I've some how accumulated so much stuff that it's been a bit overwhelming, and with the big move, my parents really want to transform what used to be my room then a guest bedroom then my room again and soon a guest bedroom again they're ready to throw everything out. So naturally, all the little craft supplies called for a DIY or few and out of all the jewelry DIY c&é has featured, this has been by far my favorite and a total crowd pleaser since I get a ton of compliments on it!

{you will need}
silver linked chain
gold linked chain
black suede rope
wire cutter
jewelry clasp and closure

For measurements, you will just have to eyeball it to see what length you desire. My chains each were 30 inches long, but you can longer or shorter.

{step one}
Fold each chain in half so it's even and cut it so it's even. You will go from two chains, one gold and one silver, to four chains, two gold and two silver.

{step two}
To measure the length of the necklace your want, fold the rope in half and put it around your neck and hold the ends in front of you to see. Remember you will also have the chains. Cut the suede rope in half as well. Fold one strand in half and put the loop through the end of each linked chain in alternating color. Pull the loop out a bit and put the two end strands through the loop to make a knot. Do not repeat on the other side just yet.

{step three}
Now take each pair, gold and silver, and twist it to make a candy cane like swirl. Once you do that to both pairs, twist both the pairs with each other. This will make it look like one strand as opposed to two. Then repeat {step two} with the other side. It will be a bit challenging, but it's the hardest part.

{step four}
Make knots at the end of the necklace on the other side of the suede rope. Add the closure to one side and make a double knot and clasp to the other side and make a double knot again. You can add super glue to reinforce the knots.
