five essentials : for a flapper costume

Gosh, how glamorous are these photographs? Better question, how beautiful are these men and women? The 20s are so inspiring and I always try to go for something more glamorous rather than gaudy for Halloween. It is always so much fun to play dress up. I'm not sure if I will be partaking in much Halloween festivities, so I'm celebrating through the blog [hope you don't mind]. My senior year of undergrad's halloween weekend was a blast. I ended up attending three different events and dressed up as a bond girl, Princess Jasmine and a flapper. The flapper was the best outfit and I got tons of compliments. Unfortunately, it was before the time of instagram and I did not dare to take my digital camera with me. So you will just have to imagine what I looked like. Here is your last minute flapper costume in 1, 2... 5 easy steps!

fringy dress
I didn't have to go far for a fringe dress since they're something always in style. I just went to the closest mall and there was a healthy selection of dresses for me to choose from. I chose a black one, but you can always go for a cream or red one. Remember you want to stand out, so pick something fun! I found this one at Lord & Taylor.

strands of pearls
Don't spend too much money or too much energy searching for strands of pearls. Your local Forever 21 or the like will have it! You can either wrap it around your neck at different lengths or tie a knot. I ended up wrapping the strand around my neck a few times and then added some vintage of brooches to it. It looks glamorous and keeps the pearls from shifting too much too.

headbands with sequins and feathers
I will confess to you. I wore so many headbands my final year of undergrad and well after undergrad too. I was trying to bring out the early seasons of the Blair Waldorf out of me. The selection at BHLDN are always so beautiful. But if you're going for something less expensive, you can always visit your local craft store and make your own or buy it on Forever 21's website.

bold lips
You can't be a flapper without some bold lips. If you have fairer skin, try going for a deep burgundy color. For someone with a browner skin tone, like mine, pick something that pops like a red. Your lips will complete the outfit. You don't want to go too heavy on the eyes, so a bold lip is ideal.

vintage waves in a chignon
I had a short bob when I was a flapper, so I just lightly curled it with a smaller curling iron. Now that my hair is long, I can do big vintage waves and side sweep it into a chignon. Here is a vintage waves tutorial and your side chignon tutorial!

  1. This is a great idea! We're not doing anything for Halloween this year, but I am going to have to remember this costume idea for next year!

Great tips! Flapper is always a good choice for Halloween! This year I am going less glamorous and dressing up as a Black Widow (from the Avengers). Nick is going to be Wolverine - he's even growing out his hair and beard! Haha!
