design : tufted

I kind of had a freak out moment last night. My mom was talking to me about marriage [this is nothing new, she's been pestering me about getting married since I was... really young]. I was on Pinterest at the same time pinning some sweet homes and styles. Of course, I connected the two [marriage + design] and I panicked. Am I seriously supposed to design a home for a male and female to live in? What about the pretty flowers and patterns? Then I noticed how him & her friendly tufted furniture is. It's elegant while remaining a bit rugged.

...and this one, my friends, is the cherry on the top.

I'm just going to tuft everything in my future home.
Everything.
Resolved.

live to create : gilded candle holders

Happy Monday, friends! I thought I would start the week with a big bang and give you a fun DIY post. It has been too long since I've given you any crafting projects, so here it is. I am excited about this week because of The Art to Inspiration Project launch [if you're interested, just comment below], and also excited for next week as I'm dedicating the blog to lots of fun things for Valentines Day!

* * *

After seeing these, I wanted to get my hands on something gilded. It makes me feel glamorous and what better way than to make it myself? I have so many glass candle holders and other votives laying around my home. It doesn't hurt to try it out. It came out perfectly! Have you gilded anything? Please share if you have any gilded tutorials.

You will need: Ziploc bag[s] or plastic bag[s], masking tape, gold metallic spray paint that can be used on indoor products, and your candle holders. Keep in mind, you don't have to use holders, you can use other things.

{1} Make sure the holder is clean and dust free. If you don't clean, the gold paint will not go on smoothly.
{2} Run the tape according to your desired style/pattern.
{3} Wrap the entire area that you don't want gold with plastic and run tape along the edges of the plastic.

{1} Make sure you work in a well-ventilated area, preferably outdoors. Layout old newspapers.
{2} To remove the stickers, use Goo-Gone, can be found at your local hardware store.
{3} For me, I wanted the bottoms to be gilded, so I placed the holders upside down.
{4} Make sure you do 2-3 coats to get an even coat.

And voila! You can use them anywhere around the house. I placed candles in these, and will eventually use them to place my baubles and make up. Place some pens, pencils and hi-lighters in your office. I would probably love giving these things away as party favors after a girls night filled with a candle, bath salts and lavender oil. I might end up gilding everything in my house actually...

Just thought you might be interested, Camille Styles' has a great gilded business card idea here!

Or you can try this gilded bauble plate!

Remember, if you have gilded something or plan on it in the near future, share with us here. Would love to see what you have thought of.

{on the record player}
L'Heure Avait Sonne by Joyce Jonathan

I've done something really bad. I have failed to watch the last two episodes of Gossip Girl. With all the intense post-holiday catch-up in my professional life, I was lacking in my social life. Well friends, I'm going to be spending this weekend with Hulu, many cups of tea, macarons and scented candles. Any of you care to join? It's about time I kick back and relax for a bit.

What do you all have planned for today and tomorrow? By the way, do you like the addition of {on the record player}? I thought with the addition of music, you could learn a bit about me. And perhaps you can share whats on your playlist this weekend!

As always, some lovely links for the weekend.

Clearly smitten with European fashion and captured moments.

I love throwbacks, especially photos!

The most beautiful tulips I have ever seen.

Welcome to my wishlist, little beauty.

Cocktail to cupcake.

This outdoor setting is enticing.

the joy of : style & grace

{via}

I will admit one thing. I have the second biggest crush on Clemence [next to Kate Middleton]. It's terrible, I sometimes use just her as a pinterest search. She was so graceful and elegant in Gossip Girl, and has the sweetest accent ever. Whenever I watch shows or movies like Gossip Girl, with stylish and graceful women, I want to be just like them. So for the following 24 hours I'll try and act/do things that will make me come off as a real woman. Does it last? No. When does it end? When I stuff my face with Chick-fil-a. I don't think Clemence eats Chick-fil-a. Sadly, I'm not joking about any of this.

{PS} My friend, Kate, just brought this to my attention. I knew I loved Bloomberg!

vogue : pretty pastels

Okay, show of hands, who loves Parisian women? Don't worries, girl crushes are fine. I feel like this spring season, it's all about pretty pastels and bold lips. Reminds me of Parisian women. Just love. It will be particularly fun going from dark, deep colors from winter to whimsical, soft pastels in the spring.
via {1} {2} {3} {4} {5} {6}

To be frank, I'm too nervous about wearing too much pastel. Being tan [genetically], I'm not sure I can pull it off too well. So, I like to mix and match bold colors, pastels and patterns. Don't you think pastels are adorable for the weekend? Perhaps a picnic?

Of course, I needed to share this with you. If any of you are out searching high and low for some pastel for your wardrobe, start here! How gorgeous is that dress? And what a bargain! If you've got something you love, not listed here, please share the link with us.

recipe : vegetarian chili

Okay seriously, I should have posted this one back in December, but it wasn't cold enough. Now, it actually feels like the dead of winter. My Sunday proved it as I sat in bed with socks on my hands and feet, with a fuzzy blanket wrapped around me. You heard me, socks on my hands.

Oh, you know what the worst is about winter? Coming home late at night from work, stripping off your work clothes, putting on your warmest and softest pajamas, jumping into bed and BAM it's freezing. How on earth is your room warm and your bed's cold frigid? To overcome this, I placed an electric blanket on top of the mattress. So as I come home, I turn it on and then proceed with procedures 2 to 4. Am I a genius or what?

The recipe today is only for the vegetarian chili, but the corn bread recipe that I often use can be found here. Remember, you can get creative with vegetarian chili. I think that's why I love it so much. If I don't have a specific ingredient from the list, easy substitution. Also, if you're lookin' for some real mean meat, just substitute the soy crumbles for ground bison, beef or turkey. Oh, and there is a very special ingredient in there.

five essentials : for choosing wine

I've gotten a few emails about purchasing wine after I posted my reflection of 2011. I spent a good amount of time studying oenology, the study of wine, and then treated myself to a trip to Spain! I thought that I'd share some of my tips to purchasing wine, which are the same as I shared with some of you. If you have any specific questions, don't be afraid to email me, I'd love to hear from you and/or answer any questions.

{1} Most of us, who are not wine connoisseurs, will splurge on a bottle of wine that is between the $15 to $20 range. I like to call this the comfort range. It's completely fine if you don't have a palette for wine, but to enjoy a wine that is within that range, you want to go with a wine from Spain. The comfort range is actually not that high of a range, so staying true to Spain will never fail you. If you're going for a white wine, then try the sparkling white cava from Catalonia. If red, then try a La Rioja, the authentic Spain wine.

{2} My parents always choose wines from California because they are familiar with the state and the types of wines. If you're looking to spend some good money, stick to Napa or Sonoma. My favorites, however, are Santa Barbara and Santa Ynez. These are smaller, up-and-coming vineyards in California. They will be cheaper compared to the Napa and Sonoma prices, so don't be afraid to try it.

{3} If you're looking for more flavor and the perfect balance with a meal then pick a wine with less alcohol content. Somewhere within the 13% range will not drown out the spices and herbs of whatever you are eating. Also, I like to use these wines with starters.

{4} Remember, more expensive does not mean better wine. I have been so completely disappointed with wines that are uncontrollably high. With that said, there are wines in the higher price range that are delicious. That, however, asks for another blog post or an email.

{5} I think my favorite rule I have ever come across was, if you haven't heard of the producer, pick it up. Smaller producers care about the quality of each bottle of wine. If you take only one thing away from this post, it is purchasing wines from small, family run vineyards will be the best decision you will ever make.

design : a danish home

I thought today we would do something different around here.
Close your eyes, imagine you're in Denmark. If you haven't been there, it's okay. Just imagine what you would imagine it to be. Now take my hand, and let me give you a tour of my favorite home out here.

Honestly, there are more to the house than I stated, but it doesn't need to be pointed out.
So, how'd you enjoy the tour? Did I talk too much?

{weekend note}

For some reason, no matter how hard I try, I never want to have a super relaxing-don't do anything kind of weekend. I kind of want to celebrate the fact that my life is completely caught up, and I finally have time for some friends. Having a few people over for dinner this weekend and perhaps some window shopping on Sunday after a big brunch.  To me, this is called relaxing in good company
Is this how you relax?

five essentials : love & coveted

I love how the container says to use it before and after you have done some gardening. The best part is, I don't garden. I can't get down and dirty like Whitney. This weather dries out my finger tips, especially for a champion hand washer like me. But, lets be honest, the only reason I got this is because of the handsome man on the lid. Just kidding.

I've been searching high and low for a nice light everyday lipstick. For some reason, after wearing red lipstick a few times, I've been feeling completely naked without anything on my lips. Even gloss hasn't been doing any justice. I saw this lipstick featured in the latest Matchbook Mag. Very economical and this color is perfect for tan skin. The best things: it doesn't run, shimmers [!], and lives up to the name of moisture renew.

{3} Keepsake Postcard
Once I was accepted to one of the graduate schools I applied to, my former professor's mother knitted me a scarf! [I'm wearing it today.] One that I really appreciate is handwritten notes, and her handwriting took me back to class. It still does. On top of that, the postcard is of Efez in Izmir, Turkey-an ancient Greek city. On the top of my international bucket list.

{4} Jewelry Holder
I dont know where exactly this came from, but I stole borrowed it from my mom. I didn't ask her. I like to keep this little buddy on my nightstand because I always forget to take out my earrings and ring off before I hop into bed. It's the perfect, chic holder. I actually think it's for incense... oh well!

I ask for you to go out right now and buy one of these. It will be the best money you have ever spent. Last week my computer freaked out and turned off by itself. What does this mean?! If you have ever had this issue, let me know. Anyway, I save an extra copy of everything on this little sucker and it is perfect.

Just thought of this: what are some lipstick colors I should try out?

vogue : a christmas story

Don't worry, you didn't click on a random blog post. This post is actually called "a christmas story." So let me tell you about part of my day yesterday [I'll spare you the boring details]. I decided I finally needed a planner for 2012. I wanted to go all digital and have everything update on my ical only, but couldn't and needed to get a planner asap. The little baby OCD inside of me was having some serious anxiety. I felt almost... naked without my handbook planner. I went to get one and they were 50% off [now $13 from $26], which is a deal in itself. The lady at the register didn't believe me when I told her the planner was 50% off. She knows that moleskins don't have discounts, she was proven wrong by another cashier and then for some reason proceeded to give me the moleskin for $3 [instead of having to pay $26].

Then I headed to Whole Foods to pick up some barley and herbes de provence [hint: upcoming recipe]. I decided to pick up one of their delicious fruit-vegetable juices. My favorite is the citrus cooler and the woman before me ordered the citrus cooler minus the ginger root. The barista accidentally added ginger root in hers, so he decided to make her another one and give her the one with the ginger root to her for free. The woman didn't want it and asked the barista to keep it. I was next and ordered the citrus cooler, he handed me a free juice.

Finally, I headed to Nine West to exchange sizes for a pair of shoes. I had seen these black wedges there 2 months ago that I absolutely needed, but couldn't spend $150 on plain black wedges. As I was browsing through the isles waiting for the checkout desk to open up, I saw the wedges. One pair, my size. I tried them on to be vain and check out my killer calves how they look on me. Yup, they looked great. Took 'em off and the red clearance sticker came off. $7, people. $7. It was like a message from the fashion gods that I have done some good karma.

So that is my christmas story in January. Pretty sweet day, eh? What did I do with the saved money? Some much needed [virtual] retail therapy.

{PS} I'm searching for a sweet peplum blouse, so if you have any suggestion-holla at me.

recipe : pomegranate & buttermilk last minute cake

So I wasn't sure if I wanted to call this last minute cake or comfort cake. I think all comfort food has buttermilk in it, it kind of gives food that whole home feeling. Lets just say, I made this in the evening and the next morning the container was empty. My brother had eaten 70% of the cake. I thought, well maybe, last minute would be a better choice because the cake was literally made in less than an hour. I mixed everything in less than 15 minutes and it was done baking in less than 20 minutes!

Also, I wanted to try baking with pomegranate. I liked the texture and the little bits of tartness from the seeds, but I would suggest strawberries, raspberries or blueberries. Those will do the trick if you're looking for more fruity flavor.

By the way, not sure if you read my post from last night or read my pretty aggressive tweets, but I have a new interactive recipe index! You can click on the link or find it under the weekly features on the right.

Click on the image to enlarge the recipe.

the recipe index

After lots of sweat, tears and vodka [just kidding about the vodka!] I finally got the recipe index up and running. People, this was not just some ordinary feat. I had the hardest time choosing a template. Then came to realize that once you change templates, you can't go back without installing the whole thing again. Doesn't sound bad? Wait until you forget what the template name is and have to go through all 5,000 choices again.

That's not all, friends. It gets worse. You know those links at the top as categories [appetizers, baked goods, etc.]? Well, those took me well over 6 hours to figure out. Supposedly, tumblr likes to play games with you and you have to make some redirect link and rename the original URL blah blah blah. Personally, I don't trust those category links, which is why I keep going back and checking to see if they still work.

In the end, I conquered the world wide web.

I'll be honest, I'm in the middle of a candy wrapper pool. This was a pretty stressful task and I succumbed to the sweetness and warmth of Dove, Kisses and Krackle.

Oh and in case you're wondering. You can find the recipe index here, or just look under the weekly features link for recipe index!

the joy of : frames

I'm always so compelled by empty frames. When I was in Spain last summer, I had a light lunch in a shanty-like pub. I wish I took a picture of it, the walls were covered with empty frames. All different sizes, different eras, different textures, different colors.

But I do think I can pull off this look. Frames above a cornered centerpiece. Does that even make sense?

I'm not sure why I haven't done one of these posts for well over a month, they're so inspirational and fun to put together. Anyways, I've had the opportunity to travel quite extensively. In my final home, I want to create one big gallery wall filled with framed bits and pieces of some of my adventures.

Do you fill your frames with something special?

design : grace & grandeur

* * *
I know neons and tangerine are the new color palette for the upcoming season, but can we just take a step back and admire the beauty and elegance of this pair? The marriage of white and gold exudes simplicity yet grace and grandeur. Not sure if I'll be able to walk away from this palette. Ever.

By the way, if you're wondering if I was able to successfully catch up with my life this weekend? Yes. Cleaned, organized everything. Found three lipsticks and a lipgloss in one purse. I finally have my life in control. Now, I just want to work ahead. Do you do that? Do you try to get things done ahead of time?

{weekend note}

via {1} {2}

I am having such a hard time getting in the swing of things after the holidays. Not only am I not making a dent in my things to do list, but I have very little [more like no] motivation. This weekend, I'm spending much needed time cleaning, organizing and catching up on everything so I can jump back into my daily routine without falling further and further behind. But lets ask on Monday, how much I actually got done.

What are your plans this weekend? Are you falling behind, or have you caught up.

lets collaborate!

A few months back I put together this post, and got great feedback. I asked everyone where they got their daily color inspiration from, and I came to realize, paintings and other forms of art is the greatest source of inspiration. The colors, lines, strokes blend organically. The piece by Martin Creed inspired me to search more of his work, and obviously expand to other forms of paintings. I had an art history class in college, which enhanced my appreciation for the creative discipline.

With that said, after collaborating with Ashley on the most recent art for inspiration post, I noticed that so many of us bloggers and readers have a great appreciation for the art discipline. I want to open the doors and invite you to do art to inspiration posts with me. This is an opportunity to :

First, meet other bloggers and learn more about them. Art is such a unique concept that helps us understand each other. There are so many interpretations, emotions and feelings that go into a specific work. With my collaboration with Ashley, I got to learn more about her!

Second, brings attention and appreciation to the world of art and design. I mentioned to Kate, I want to use artwork by talented and young artists. There is so much to discover out in this world, lets bring it close to home.

As you can tell, this is not a project to expand my blog or anything. I merely want to get to know most of you. Twitter and blog comments don't do it justice. I think this is a great way to collaborate. You don't need to have a blog, and if you don't I will give you instructions on how you will be able to participate!

If you are interested in collaborating, please leave me your blog name and e-mail as a comment or via Twitter, Facebook, or Email. I will be sure to send details about our project soon!

vogue : 12 trends of 2012

Funny story, actually not much for me. I spent hours putting this post together, and it was originally planned to be posted yesterday. I, in my unfortunate lack-of-caffeine state, ended up deleting the post. Can you believe it!? So, I opened up a Flickr account, to upload/save all my graphics, and spent countless hours again working on this post. I hope you enjoy as much as I enjoyed putting it together... twice!

{1} Patterns & Prints - I love how everyone is mix and matching patterns. To be honest, it's like the nautical stripes are the neutral of the patterned world. I've loved Betsy and her stripes with floral.

{2} Neon - Who doesn't love a pop of color? Make it the main focus and pair your neon-wear with some neutral accessories. What the heck, you can find some neon DIY jewelry here!

{3} Strappy Heels - I'm particularly excited about these coming back! I've got a ton of vintage strappy heel gems that I am itching to bust out. I wear them around my room, when no one is looking.

{4} Bubble Necklace - This J Crew necklace is to die for! Statement jewelry are the in, and we'll also find statement earrings on the runway. Have you seen any that you like?

{5} Pastels - There is something so whimsical, ladylike and parisian about pastels, don't you think? I am particularly smitten with a pale pink. Ooh, with a pale blue gingham shirt?

{6} Peplum - Just like pastels, I feel as if the peplum trend will really help all of us out. Giving us that added exaggerated curve at the waist. I'm excited to get a peplum pencil skirt!

{7} Something in Tangerine - What better way than to start a new season than with color? I recently gifted myself a Zoya nailpolish in yellow and am psyched to pair it with my grey spring dress!

{8} Bird Print - Not only is bird print, but floral, is back in style. Pair it with browns and greys for a more rustic look. Kendi does a great job in this Fossil dress.

{9} Platform Wedges - With skinny jeans, who wouldn't? After seing Kristin in this outfit, I knew I had to get a pair of some platform wedges, and these are beautiful!

{10} Drop Waist - The 20s are back! Oh the days of long strands of pearls, sequin and net hair pieces, flappers. I think it is absolutely stunning on a whole different level.

{11} Art Deco - I was skeptical about this trend at first. The more I think about a form fitting feminine dress with sharp lines, I'm loving it. It's different and very modern, yet classic.

{12} Cafe Capris - I'm not much of a pants person, always in skirts and dresses. These cafe capris are something that I'm enjoying. I have a pair of black capris that would seriously make anyone look great.

So, there you have it. 12 trends of 2012! What are you most excited about?
For me, it's the peplum cuts and drop waist dresses.

{PS}
Shout out to my good friend, Sarah Beth! I've known her since my debate days in high school [as shared in my previous post]. When life throws words like genuine and true, you think of Sarah Beth. recipe : arugula-clementine salad with honey balsamic vinaigrette

Okay, so last week I indulged in my [winner, winner] chicken dinner, and this week I'm trying to take 2012 a little bit more seriously. Key word here is trying. Honestly, I eat fairly healthy anyways, but I really want to eat healthy the next few weeks to [drum roll] fit into my Indian clothes! Yup, my cousin is getting married [Indian style] the weekend of February 10th. So, in this health kick, you all are coming with me.

I enjoy the peppery flavor of arugula and in particular, enjoy mixing my sweets with savories. Apple slices and blue cheese, chicken nuggets and honey, raspberries and spinach. I actually picked up this sweet-savory habit from high school... when I was at debate camp. I prefer not to answer any questions that stem off of the fact that I [happily] attended summer debate camps in grade school.

Anyway, you can always find what I'm eating and cooking on Instagram. My pictures are 10% fashion and 90% food. Also, I always post a picture of my week's recipe on Facebook at least one or two days in advance. Just so you know, so you can stay in the loop!

five essentials : to a stocked bar cart

Honestly, this isn't a 5 essentials post, but more like an "all the essentials" post. Bar carts are kind of the thing to have these days. I'm not complaining. I'm a big fan of the vintage gold finishings with glass shelves. It's retro and pretty versatile for any kind of party. Also, having a mobile bar? Who wouldn't want that? This post was inspired by all the pictures on pinterest yesterday [since it was a long Monday and I needed a drink] and the holidays. After attending a few holiday parties, I admired the drink accommodation by the hosts!  So here's a guide to stocking the ideal bar cart.

{sprits, etc.}
Gin, Light Rum, Dark Rum, Tequila, Bourbon, Rye Whiskey, Vodka, Red Wine, White Wine

{glassware, etc.}
Highball, Martini, Old Fashion, Red Wine, White Wine

{garnishes}
Lime, Orange, Green Olives, Pearl Onions, Maraschino Cherries, Salt

{mixers}
Cointreau, Bitters, Dry Vermouth, Sweet Vermouth, Orange Juice, Cranberry Juice, Seltzer, Tonic, Coke

{bar tools}
Cocktail shaker, Ice Bucket with Tongs, Essential Seven-piece Bar Set, Wine Cooler Canister

Of course you can tweak this to accomodate your party theme or personal drink preference. I actually placed a small handbook I picked up from a bookstore with drink recipes.

* * *

* * *
Is there anything special or unique you have on your bar cart?
More importantly, whose ready for a drink?

design : the new traditional

It is our goal to honor person, place and lifestyle. No two should be the same.
Here is a slice of some of those lives. Enjoy.

I finally got my hands on Darryl Carter's new book, The New Traditional
Such eclectic taste. Antiques with rich-hued wood finishings.
Coffee tables paired with elegantly curved chairs and love seats.

Note, these are all not designed by Darryl Carter. Carter's design book inspired me to find other designers with similar design essence.

{weekend note}

via {1} {2}

Now that the holidays are officially over, I am hoping to prop up my feet with some tea and a good book. Is it just me or has it been a very long ride the past few weeks? I'm looking forward to getting back in the groove: load of laundry, checking email [yikes!], blogging, and picking up the pieces from before I left for the midwest. Seems like I've been on vacation for a long, long time.

What are your plans this weekend? Tackling any major projects?
As always, some inspirational links for you.

My recent color obsession.

Need to get my life in order. First, with a desktop calendar.

My kind of tree house.

I am ready to have a glamorous, relaxing weekend like this.

Will I be seeing you at Blog Brunch?

Doesn't Kelly look gorgeous?
