five essentials : to see/do in st. andrews

I’d say living here in Scotland has made me quite the connoisseur of St. Andrews. It is an absolute breathtaking town, rather the entire country is quite stunning. I just can’t share the entire country’s must see in this five essentials post. Not possible. But I’ve dabbled a bit here and there of places to visit.
{British Golf Museum}
Many of you may not know this, but the game of golf originated in Scotland in the early 1400s. The museum, opened in 1990, documents the history and culture behind the game from medieval times to present day.
{St Andrews Old Course}
The old course of St Andrews is the oldest golf course in the world. This course, in particular, has determined how golf is played today. For example, the Old Course used to have 22 holes. Players thought the first two and the last two holes were far too short, which led to the combination of those from 22 to 18 holes.
{St Andrews Castle}
Scotland is known for its beautiful, medieval castles. You can get lost in the intertwining walls. Located in Fife, Scotland, it is considered as Scotland’s most prominent castle’s as it played a role in Scottish independence. The castle sits on a promontory over looking the North Sea. A little interesting fact: the castle used to be a brutal prison as well.
{St Andrews Cathedral}
The cathedral is just two words, jaw dropping. It was founded in 1158 and then became a ruin after the Reformation. It is built in a Romanesque style and beautifully built with gray sandstone ashlar.
{Fife Coastal Path}
Runs from Kincardine to Newburgh. The stretch cover not only the most beautiful, scenic parts of Scotland, but also many historic sites. These sites include Aberdour Castle, Macduff’s Castle and East Wemyss. The most noteworthy sites, however, are Harbourmaster’s House and Dysart.

please include them in your comments!
  • I would definitely say that St Andrews Botanic Garden is a must-see! It has been around since the late 1800s but was redesigned – as you see it today – in the 1970s. Unfortunately, the Garden’s lease is up and it may be closing in September. Make sure to see it while you can!
