restless by william boyd

Very rarely do I pick up a novel that has a very straightforward plot. One that is not filled with
themes or symbols to look out for. Actually, when I think about it, I don’t really remember the last time
I read something so “simple”. I wouldn’t downplay Boyd’s writing at all, but it’s not as complex as some
of the other page-turners I mentioned on c&é. I enjoyed Boyd’s story that tells the tale of a young woman
who discovers her mothers past as a spy. Flipping back and forth between decades, it unravels unexpected
relationships. You see friendships and connections between people develop and hinder throughout the
novel that reminds me a bit about how the natural way of life works. Yes, this is me getting deep again.

a bit about me

You see, I was quite intrigued by this espionage title. It re-ignited my interest in history and
politics and took place during the time the world drastically changed. As you can probably tell from previous
readings, I’m a bit of a political history enthusiast. I had high hopes with my career in the government.
My short life there was everything I expected plus more. Though I can’t get into more detail about what I
did, for the sake of my privacy and for security concerns, it was a time in my life that had a profound
impact on how I view the world and its people today.

My previous career {and advanced career aspirations} was one that dealt with the Middle East region.
Understanding the people of the different countries, mannerisms, traditions as well as geography {of
all sorts}, governments and diplomatic affairs. I dissected the region and helped predict trends and
plant the next footprint. People have their qualms with what I did and to be frank, I did too. It was a job
that I found utterly fascinating and helpful to what I do today.

So without sounding too vague, this is why I thought I would give William Boyd a chance. His writing is
therapeutic and not complicated. He paints parts of Europe in your head that easily takes me back to
the streets I once roamed in Edinburgh and roam today in London. It’s a quick and easy read and ideal f
or any leisurely weekend.
