three office uniforms

the outfit equation

in collaboration with Boden special thanks to Leena Zahra

I’m not sure if you’ve noticed, but life has been a bit on the hectic side lately. With fashion month starting very, very shortly, the team has been putting together proposals, implementing the execution phase of projects and trying to meet deadlines. Mornings are earlier and evenings push well passed the evening sun. With mental and physical exhaustion in peak, my alarm snooze button has been getting quite the workout. And with mornings where my HIIT routines are replaced with rushing to get to the office, I thought I would share 3 fail-safe outfit equations with you that get me through hectic, last-minute mornings.

The ‘outfit equation’ is a sartorial representation of a standard outfit expressed through a formulae and results in an impossibly chic outfit. Confused? Let’s get started…

shift dress + heels + all-day purse = day to night

I think this is my favorite combination and I tend to wear it when I have early morning meetings and then dinners that go into the evenings. I prefer a more cotton blend dress because it’s breathable and more comfortable against my skin. Cotton tends to hold it’s shape a lot better than other materials too, so you won’t have the problem of looking worn down by the end of the day. Pair the dress with a comfortable heel and a purse that is big enough for all your things and small enough to not look like you’re lugging around a suitcase!

textured pencil skirt + bold cashmere jumper = exciting classics

A pencil skirt outfit has the high risk of looking plain, especially in workwear. I prefer to go for a textured material along the lines of tweed. This adds some dimension to color and can help hide problem areas too! Pair with a bright hued cashmere jumper for a luxe look and the bold color will help you bring color to a 9-to-5 setting. Since pencil skirts can be a bit limiting, I like to pair them with a kitten heel for a little extra comfort.

bold tailored trousers + shirt + statement heel = the conservative client

My job requires me to meet all types of people from distinct backgrounds. With some of my more conservative clients, I prefer to wear tailored trousers. Go for something in a dark, powerful color like burgundy and pair it with a shirt. Instead of a standard collared shirt, I went for a collarless shirt with a subtle bib detail for a more feminine look. Top off the outfit with a statement heel that brings it all ‘chic-fully’ together.

    • I was so surprised by them! I don’t look too great in tailored trousers, but these were super flattering! Thank you, Yuka! x

  • Supal you gorgeous woman. I love the first option, although I have to admit I’m more likely to go for something like the third one just because my style is non-existent haha x

    • OH YOU STOP haha. The dress option is always a personal fav, but you really should try some colorful trousers 🙂 x

  • Love these styling tips! My go to is definitely a great skirt, heels and a bag. I’m looking to add a camel coat and a great pair of heels to my collection 🙂

  • Lovely! I need to get a few of my work pieces tailored soon I think as I’m trying to focus my wardrobe more into professional. Though I don’t have many casual clothes left, except two pairs of jeans. xx

    • Story of my life. The worst is when I go out on the weekends and I always tend look like I’m going to the office. I get made fun of so much ahah

  • Ok, so here’s the plan. You’re going to be my personal shopper, ok? Seriously. I am LOVING each and every outfit. That maroon sweater is giving me LIFE. And those nude suede heels?! Killing me.

    • Yeah no problem! That jumper is literally amazing. I love versatile pieces that can take me from office to weekend! AND THOSE HEELS are so comfortable!! x

  • I seriously feel like this is my work uniform as well! I live in these structured pieces that I can take from day to night since I’m always running to the next thing. That first shift dress is perfection!

    • Two peas in a pod! I love day-to-evening outfits as I’m ALWAYS at afterwork drinks or dinner. I think shift dresses are perfect for those! x

  • Paige Allison

I love how you got all scientific with it and made formulas! Haha. It really seems as though everyone’s life is ramp’ed up with the busy fall season. I’m looking for ways to reduce my workload, I know that. Some people thrive on being over-scheduled and stressed; I am not one of them. You manage to look chic as always! That raisin color of the cashmere is PERFECT on you.

    • HAHA I’m so Indian. This time of year is always hectic for me as fashion week is my company’s olympics. Literally life is at warp speed at the moment and I need it to chill out. GAH WINE PLEASE.

  • Pretty outfits for work and so beautiful photography! Outfit number one is my favourite professional look

I like the simple and classic ideas employed here.

    • Thank you, Leslie! I try to stick to simpler looks you can hopefully pull together from pieces in your closet! x

  • Tiffany {A Touch of Grace}

I absolutely love all 3 of these looks. I’ve never been a burgundy fan but am loving it for this fall. And a shift dress and pencil skirt are favorites of mine for work. Always.

    • Oh it took me a while to get used to wearing so much color when it came to trousers haha. London is usually pretty forgiving when the sun is out, so that helps! x

  • Teresa Schubert

Found you through the Boden blog and Instagram! You are so beautiful and love that shift dress on you!

  • Nicole Nelson

That photo of you sat on the stairs is beyond gorgeous, Supal! I loved your twist on the classic pencil skirt and cashmere jumper. I’ll definitely be trying that out soon 🙂 x

    • Thank you so much, Nicole! The lighting was absolute perfection that evening and I think it added to the photos. And REALLY HOPE this post inspired some of your work wear ; )
