It’s been one week since I’ve been back form Italy and I truly think I’ve misplaced my motivation. The past few summers were spent almost entirely in London mostly because the city tends to empty out quite a bit (albeit the tourists) and the little neighborhoods outside your usually zones 1 and 2 are sanctuaries. I use the summer to truly explore and embrace London, but I knew this summer I wanted to do what the Brits do and that was to enjoy a typical European summer holiday.

My tickets to Italy were booked early this year and unlike most of my trips, I had prepared very little for this one. I think I had already set the mindset for a relaxing summer holiday and didn’t want to taint it with deadlines, projects or ideas. And before I continue on with another sentence about how I actually tried to take a holiday, let’s dive into my day spent in Menaggio, Lake Como…

We ended up visiting 4 villages of Lake Como, but 6 if you count the town we stayed in Lezzeno and the main city Como for our lunch before heading to Milan. Menaggio in Lake Como wasn’t my favorite and can easily be categorized as a village that you didn’t really need to visit. If you are, however, looking for an experience that is a bit more suburban/residential—then Menaggio in Lake Como was your place.

Lunch

We got Menaggio around lunchtime. Parked our cars and started walking around the squares and the little allies. After a few rounds, we found a spot under an umbrella at Bar al Paladar de la Memoria. It seemed like the place the locals were heading for a quick lunch and espresso, so we sat and watched as they ordered. If you’re new to the Italian lakes, go for a seasonal pasta dish and/or a lake fish {that is often served with a vegetable in season}

Gelato

From lunch we went to a corner shop off the square to get gelato. We thought we would wait for a few hours, but couldn’t resist as we saw people exiting the shops with double scoops in hand. So we walked into La Fabrica del Gelato {a chain in the Como region, and not at all bad}.

Stroll

With a melting gelato in one hand and a camera in another, we walked through Piazza Guiseppe Garibaldi and towards the water for the scenic views of the village next door. There are so many little benches along Viale Benedetto Castelli.

From the seafront, we then just got lost among the little tributary streets that connected to the piazza. I would recommend just putting the map away and walking. Everything around the piazza is so picturesque and quaint—stick to that!

After about 90 minutes in Menaggio, we were done and ready to head onto our next Lake Como adventure…
